Vegan Question about carbs?

Ok so I've been following the vegan food pyramid about how many servings of certain foods your suppose to have a day. And it said a majority consist of whole wheat grains . But I wanna know if this is right becauseI I'm watchin my weight due to health reasons. I've been running and swimming laps along with walkin my dogs and light weights. And I want to know if this will mess up my whole diet
